Topsail Hill Preserve E-Bike Trail Guide

Pristine Wilderness Where the Forest Meets the Gulf

Welcome to Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, one of the last truly wild stretches of coastline on the Emerald Coast. This 1,640-acre preserve protects towering sand dunes (some reaching 25 feet), rare coastal dune lakes, and over a mile of completely undeveloped Gulf shoreline. The park’s paved tram road and network of trails make it one of the most unique e-bike destinations on 30A — a place where you can ride from dense coastal forest to sugar-white sand without passing a single building.

Why Topsail Hill Preserve is Perfect for E-Bikes

  • Untouched Coastline: Over a mile of pristine, undeveloped beach accessible only by trail. No condos, no crowds, no cars.
  • Paved Tram Road: A 2.7-mile paved road runs from the park entrance to the beach, making it perfectly suited for e-bikes.
  • Ecological Diversity: Five distinct ecological communities in one park — pine flatwoods, scrub, dune lake shore, coastal strand, and beach dune.
  • Rare Dune Lakes: Three coastal dune lakes are found within the preserve, each supporting unique plant and animal communities.

Must-See Attractions

  • Topsail Hill Beach: Consistently ranked among the best beaches in Florida. The absence of development makes the turquoise water and white sand feel almost untouched by time.
  • Morris Lake: The largest of the park’s three coastal dune lakes. A stunning body of water surrounded by ancient dunes and native vegetation.
  • Campbell Lake: A smaller, more secluded dune lake with excellent birdwatching opportunities.
  • Towering Sand Dunes: Some of the tallest dunes on the Gulf Coast at up to 25 feet. The views from the top are incredible.

Suggested E-Bike Routes

  • Tram Road to Beach: The signature ride. Follow the 2.7-mile paved tram road from the park entrance through the forest canopy and out to the Gulf. Lock up at the beach and spend as long as you want on the sand.
  • Morris Lake Trail: Take the side trail to Morris Lake for a serene ride through coastal dune habitat. The lake appears through the trees like something out of a nature documentary.
  • Full Park Explorer: Combine the tram road, lake trails, and forest paths for a comprehensive ride through all five of the park’s ecological zones. This is a 2-3 hour adventure with stops.

E-Biking Tips for Topsail Hill Preserve

  • Arrive at Opening: The park has a vehicle capacity limit and does turn cars away in peak season. Arriving early guarantees entry and gives you the best wildlife viewing.
  • Beach Prep: The tram ride makes it easy to bring beach gear. Load up your e-bike basket with towels, umbrella, and a cooler.
  • Binoculars: The birdwatching here is some of the best on the Gulf Coast. Ospreys, bald eagles, wading birds, and migratory species are all common.
  • Water and Snacks: There are no concessions at the beach or on the trails. Bring everything you’ll need for the day.

Practical Information

  • Location: West of 30A on CR 30A, between Dune Allen Beach and Sandestin
  • Trail Length: 2.7-mile tram road plus approximately 3 miles of additional trails
  • Terrain: Mostly flat with some rolling dune terrain near the beach
  • Surface: Paved tram road, packed sand forest trails, and boardwalk sections
  • Parking: Parking at the main entrance (state park entry fee applies, currently $6/vehicle)

Local Highlights

  • Tram Road Canopy: The ride through the forest canopy is shaded and cool, even on the hottest summer days. The transition from forest to beach is breathtaking.
  • Coastal Dune Lakes: Three rare dune lakes in one park. These are found in only a few places on Earth.
  • Undeveloped Shoreline: No buildings, no roads, no development visible from the beach. This is what Florida looked like before the condos.
  • RV and Camping: The park has a well-equipped campground if you want to make a multi-day trip of it.

Safety and Etiquette

  • Park Hours: Topsail Hill has set opening and closing times. Check the state park website before heading out.
  • Trail Restrictions: E-bikes are welcome on the paved tram road. Check with rangers about access to unpaved trails.
  • Dune Protection: Stay off the dunes. These fragile ecosystems take decades to recover from damage. Use boardwalks and designated paths.
  • Wildlife Distance: Alligators live in the coastal dune lakes. Admire from a distance and never approach or feed wildlife.
